Danish brewery Mikkeller to open in Portland
If you say Oregon, you have to say food and beer in the same sentence. The diverse state on the American west coast offers a wide variety of some of the best food and drinks in the world, which makes it a perfect destination for a culinary adventure.
Soon there will be even more fantastic beer to enjoy in Oregon, as one of the pioneers of Danish microbrewing, Mikkeller, is opening its first pop-up in the state’s largest city, Portland on June 1, 2019.
Founder of Mikkeller Mikkel Borg Bjergsø has long had his eye on the culinary mecca of Oregon and considers the opening in Portland as a natural step in the expansion of the beer company: “The location in itself is amazing, and we love the city and the atmosphere and have a lot of friends there. On top of that, the existing food and brewing scene is awesome. Starting a pop-up with a great partner is the best way to start off and hopefully establish something more permanent”, he says.
To create the best possibilities for the opening, Mikkeller has decided to team up with the Portland-based restaurant group, Chefstable. The partnership will create a gentle transition for Mikkeller into the Portlandic market. The pop-up brewery will open its doors in the former home of Burnside Brewing in the northeastern part of Portland, while exploring the possibility of a permanent bar, restaurant and Mikkeller brewery at the site. The brewery will feature at least 23 Mikkeller taps alongside a menu of Japanese noodles and rice dishes.
Kurt Huffman, Chefstable owner is excited about the Copenhagen/Portland collaboration: “They have an approach to beer that is very different from what we see normally in Oregon,” Huffman said. “The flavor profiles are different; they’re daring in different ways than the breweries here are. … So, I think their perspective will be a great addition to the greatest beer town in America” he says to the local paper, the Oregonian.
Mikkeller is a microbrewery founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2006 by Kristian Keller and Mikkel Bjergsø. Since the first US-opening in San Diego, California 2013, the beer loving company has opened new breweries in locations all over the country, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, and now Portland is the next city in line.
On several occasions, Mikkeller has been named among the best breweries in the world in a field of more than 19,000 competitors.
