A Cultural and Active Summer in Val Gardena

Val Gardena is more than meets the eye. A slice of heaven on Earth for people wanting to be surrounded by nature, sports athletes and enthusiasts, holiday-goers looking to escape from the summer heat, and culture vultures. Summer offers countless outdoor opportunities and the valley is the ideal place for excursions, climbing, cycling, and plenty of leisurely walks with your family.
Biennale Gherdëina: Art in Val Gardena
Biennale Gherdëina contemporary art festival is curated by Lucia Pietroiusti & Filipa Ramos and will be held between May 20 and September 25, 2022. On this occasion, nature and the more urban side of the valley will merge under the watchful gaze of a community of international artists showcasing their works of art. And what about the locals? Their works will be displayed during the “UNIKA” art fair between September 1 and 4.
The Dolomites: Climbing Rockstars
Val Gardena’s Dolomites summits are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A unique experience awaits mountaineers, athletes, or bouldering enthusiasts as they get up close to the beauty of these mountains. The Sassolungo, the Sella Group, the Sass Rigais and the Furchetta reach to the sky with their over 3,000 metres. Expert hikers and mountaineers can make the most of excursions, via ferratas and climbs by talking to the guides of the Catores Alpine school and Val Gardena’s Alpine Guides Association.

Val Gardena Active

Val Gardena Active is a week-long programme of activities which aim to help you explore the valley while out and about. Pick and choose from trekking or hiking, through environmental classes, to exploring Ladin traditions and history by means of cooking and wood carving classes. We’re in the 21st century, so you don’t have to do any of these experience on your own, unlike the mountaineers of the past! Ascend mountains and explore their meadows accompanied by local and certified hiking or mountain bike guided. Besides the actual hiking, the experience also allows you to get a better grasp of the value of nature and develop a deeper understanding of your personal contact with it.
A Star-studded Menu

Eating well in South Tyrol is easy: local cuisine is based on regional recipes featuring local ingredients bursting with flavour such as Speck, smoked sausages, mouth-watering cheese and “pan sech” – a hard, crunchy rye bread. Good food can be found in several traditional restaurants and pizzerias, and even haute cuisine is catered for at Michelin and Gault Millau restaurants. The entire offer stands out for the marriage between Alpine goodness and Mediterranean flair. Outstanding culinary experiences can be found in two places in Val Gardena: the Alpenroyal Grand Hotel, in Selva di Val Gardena, headed by Mario Porcelli, a Michelin chef; and the Anna Stuben restaurant at Hotel Gardena, in Ortisei, with Michelin chef Reimund Brunner. Both chefs interpret and merge the cuisine of the two cultures, obtaining sublimely refined results.
