Celebrate the Season, California-Style
The final month of 2021 is offering plenty to celebrate. Holiday events, some of which had to sit out 2020, are back and making up for lost time. Build an easy vacation around these holiday boat parades, mansion tours, and festive shows — some running through New Year's Day.
15 Towns with Serious Holiday Spirit
From the sunny coast to the snowy High Sierra, California delivers plenty of holiday charm, especially in historic towns and villages. Think old-fashioned carriage rides in the Gold Country, karaoke events in an alpine resort, and gawking at gussied up, spirited neighborhoods. Here are some of our favorite holiday events and settings in California, listed north to south. Sneak away now—or add them to next year's holiday-travel wish list.
COSY WINTER CABINS AND LODGING
Tamarack Lodge
Mammoth Lakes may be best known for its namesake ski mountain, but don’t overlook this hidden gem on the outskirts of town—especially during winter. Right out the door of your handsome Craftsman-style cabin (from studios to three bedrooms) are cross-country and snowshoeing trails leading into pristine wilderness. The main lodge has that throwback touch that feels just right in winter: a crackling fire, plenty of well-worn board games, sink-in-deep chairs, and a bartender who knows just how much schnapps to add to your coffee. Each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, so you can whip up your own meals, but save a night for dinner at the lodge’s acclaimed Lakefront Restaurant—local Alpers trout is a specialty.
Tenaya’s “Winter Wonder Lodge”
Nestled among a forested mountain setting dusted with snow, Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite is a picture perfect holiday getaway complete with all the makings for magical seasonal fun. This AAA Four-Diamond Yosemite winter wonder lodge delights visitors with festive décor and a range of activities from epic gingerbread house decorating sessions, to twirling around an outdoor ice rink next to a crackling fire, ensuring that ever every visit is truly wrapped up with a bow.
