Dear Travel Industry Friends,

WHAT’S NEW?
As we continue to inch towards the tourism industry’s big return, life is beginning to look a lot more normal. The world is opening up for vaccinated travelers and travel planning is at an all-time high. Now is the time for the travel industry to put its best foot forward and use what we’ve learned over the past 15 months to come back smarter, safer and more sustainable than ever before.

Part of that plan should include building itineraries that cater to travelers’ desire for safety, space and unique experiences. In that interest, this month’s newsletter will focus on Northern Jutland – a breathtaking, welcoming and memorable location full of natural beauty. It’s a special region that livens up any itinerary with its unique culinary, cultural and outdoor experiences.

Of course, we’ll also have our monthly “Moment of Hygge” and a special note at the end. Thanks for reading!
NORTHERN JUTLAND OVERVIEW
For many American travelers “Jutland” might be a confusing term. We know it’s in Scandinavia somewhere…or at least we think we do. It’s interesting because it’s literally the bulk of Denmark, but with Copenhagen a few islands to the east, Jutland doesn’t get the credit it deserves. And Northern Jutland, gets even less. Well, let’s see if we can do something about that.

Here are five great reasons to add Northern Jutland to your next itinerary:

1. It’s easier to get to than you might think! The quickest way is to fly in to Aalborg, but ferries and trains also make for an easy trip for visitors.
2. The quintessentially Scandinavian cuisine. Denmark is an industry leader with focus on locally produced food and new Nordic cuisine has inspired chefs around the world to embrace the same practices. Look for local produce, beer, coffee, baked goods, meats and – of course – the coveted Limfjord oyster!
3. The natural beauty of the area is unlike any you’ve ever seen. From impossibly long, sandy beaches to the dense forests and from the fjords to the point where two seas meet in Skagen, the area supplies almost surreal beauty.
4. For the more adventurous folks, there are unlimited recreation opportunities including hundreds of miles of bike trails, beautiful hikes and even surfing in what’s known as Cold Hawaii. Personally – if I don’t chicken out - I’ve got my sights set on kite surfing.
5. Being outside the main tourist centers, Northern Jutland provides brag-worthy and highly “instagrammable” destinations for visitors looking for unique experiences to call their own while not adding to crowds in the more popular cities.

RUTH’S HOTEL
At the very Northern tip of Jutland in Skagen – “The Top of the EU” - you’ll find the gorgeous Ruth’s Hotel which offers a one-of-a-kind hospitality experience for your groups. All the fine offerings of Northern Jutland come together with beautiful accommodations, meeting space, world-class Scandinavian cuisine, outdoor recreation and unparalleled wellness options. This video makes me wish I was there right now! Especially in the post-COVID travel landscape, your visitors will appreciate the space, setting, beauty and safety of this amazing location.

And getting to Skagen is probably easier than you think whether by ferry, train, or the super-convenient Aalborg Airport.

THIS MONTH’S MOMENT OF HYGGE

Danish design is world famous for a reason and I have fully embraced it. A cup of coffee and pastry just feel more satisfying when you’re sitting in a finely-crafted chair at a comforting Danish teak table. In many ways the table is more than just a piece of furniture, but the embodiment of hygge - combining artistry, design and craftmanship to create a convivial location for friends and family to gather over food and drink.

Here is my dining table at home which we purchased from a local vintage shop way out here in California.
And, no, the cat should not be allowed up there, but he is bad cat who just won’t listen. The underside of one of the chairs, reveals the designer of the table to be Mogens-Kold which is a respected furniture designer dating back to the 1920s. I thought that was pretty cool.

I absolutely love this table and it always adds an extra layer of stability and comfort whether I’m sitting at it alone with my morning coffee or expanding the leaves for family to enjoy a full holiday dinner.
It just goes to show that the concept of hygge is simply radiating out of the Danish culture and – with the imminent easing of travel restrictions – your clients will soon be able to experience it firsthand.

For group experiences built around Danish design and architecture, be sure to check out the Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen or the Utzon Center in Aalborg.

PÅ GENSYN

My Danish may not be great, but I’m pretty sure “På Gensyn” means “see you later” and – with mixed emotions – I have to say that to you now. This marks my final newsletter for Inbound Services by Atlantic Link as I have accepted another position here in California. Denmark and Scandinavia remain my favorite international destination and I encourage you to explore the opportunities the region provides. It will definitely be the first place I visit as soon as international travel fully opens.
