Dear Travel Industry Friends,

WHAT’S NEW?
Well, it sure feels like we are getting close to major tourism breakthrough now! Personally, I am one shot away from being fully vaccinated and I’ve already got plane tickets to Europe booked for the end of summer (fingers crossed!). You’ve probably seen Denmark in the news recently for cancelling out one of the available vaccines, but rest-assured, the entire country is still on schedule to be vaccinated by mid-July. After that, and depending on the rest of the EU, we could see tourism open up in a hurry. Long story short, now is the time to lock-in your itineraries and be a part of travel’s comeback.

Scandinavia is a perfect post-COVID destination with its combination of unique cultural experiences, convenience, safety and the region’s focus on creating a sustainable path forward for the future of tourism. And let’s not forget all the amazing food!

As we get closer to that light at the end of the COVID tunnel, below are a few items of interest for the travel trade.

SOFT ADVENTURE WORKSHOP BY VISIT DENMARK
Scandinavia is full of amazing experiences and our friends at Visit Denmark are putting together a special workshop that focuses on soft adventures. Travel buyers from around the world are invited to attend and learn more about what the country has to offer. Registration closes on April 28th. You can learn more and register here.

Speaking of soft adventure, here are a few I have on my personal Danish wish-list that might be just what your clients are looking for too:
Oyster Safari
The Limfjord oysters are widely-regarded as the best in the world and I can’t wait to strap on some rubber boots, grab a bucket and catch my own. Obviously, the best part about catching them is eating them along with a beautiful local wine…maybe one from Stokkebye Wines.
Surfing
Surfing in Denmark’s “Cold Hawaii” region of Klitmøller is so great that Waikiki might want to think about changing its name to “Warm Denmark.” Surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing are all popular in the area. Lessons are available for even the most inexperienced of beginners (including me even though I’m from California!).
Distillery Tours
I’m not sure if drinking whisky officially counts as “soft adventure,” but the Thy Whisky distillery is definitely on my short list for a tasting and tour. It’s the first organic single estate distillery in the world, meaning that all the ingredients are grown on the grounds near Thy National Park.
Biking
The Danes love their bikes and the country is full of great cycling paths both in and out of the main cities. With over 2,500 miles worth of bike trails available, there is something for all levels of cyclists. If you want a grueling, multi-day adventure – no problem. Or if you just want to cruise around the city for a nice pastry and a cup of coffee, that’s easy too. I’ve got my sights set somewhere in the middle with the 2-hour ride from Fredrikshavn to Skagen…still ending with a coffee and a pastry though.
TRAVEL HACK: AALBORG AIRPORT
The more I learn about the Aalborg Airport the more my mind runs wild with creative itinerary ideas. This convenient airport can be a real ace-in-the-hole when putting together a travel plan. A few main perks I see from using Aalborg Lufthavn are:

• It brings the under-appreciated Jutland peninsula into the global tourism mix.
• There are direct flights to major hubs (Amsterdam, London, etc.) that make it easy to include in any itinerary while routes to smaller airports (Corsica, Madeira, etc.) help create unique experiences.
• Provides flexibility for car-free travel throughout Scandinavia especially when combined with trains and the ferry system.

Just look at the list of direct flights here.

Now imagine what an amazing experience a London to Aalborg to Sorrento itinerary could bring. Yes, that might require some creative packing, but Aalborg has a few H&Ms so I’m sure everyone can figure it out along the way.

THIS MONTH’S MOMENT OF HYGGE

With Denmark always on my mind, it’s easy to find hygge moments even 5,000 miles away here in California. As I am finishing up this newsletter I am sipping on a fine Danish beer by a fire with my trusty pup Frannie by my side. That’s some mighty fine hygge right there. Here’s a peak:
Frannie

And – as always – please let me know if you need any help with an itinerary, accommodations, activity suggestions or anything else Denmark related. Or just ask me about how awesome my dog is (HINT: really awesome).

Thanks!
