Mississippi Turning

The highway signs say it all: Welcome to Mississippi, Birthplace of America’s music. The first original American musical genre, the blues, was born in the cotton fields and juke joints of the Mississippi Delta.

From there, the tuneful tale has continued to be told. The roster of world-famous Mississippi performers includes Elvis Presley, BB King, Jimmie Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Buffett, Sam Moore and Tammy Wynette.

What has inspired so many country, gospel, rock, jazz, opera and pop artists to rise up from Mississippi?

Once the international travel bans are lifted, let the strains of Mississippi’s uniquely American anthem become the soundtrack for a journey your clients or readers will never forget.

Mississippi is changing. The Governor recently retired the state flag which featured a confederate emblem and a new design will be chosen by the people of Mississippi in November.

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, opened in 2018 in the state capital Jackson, has broken attendance records and has become a timely must-see Mississippi experience.

The museum promotes a greater understanding of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement and its impact by highlighting the strengths and sacrifices of its peoples.

Visitors witness the freedom struggle in eight interactive galleries that show the systematic oppression of black Mississippians and their fight for equality that transformed the state and nation.

The galleries feature a variety of fascinating and powerful exhibits that explore the essential role of church and family and learn how Black Mississippians emerged from slavery as free citizens and established strong communities—despite oppression by white Mississippians.

A theatre documents the murders of Freedom Summer volunteers James Cheney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner – which Hollywood portrayed in the film Mississippi Burning. A re-created jail cell and a tear gas canister from the integration of the University of Mississippi give a sense of the brutal conditions and retaliation that activists faced.

Seven of the galleries encircle a central space called “This Little Light of Mine.” There, a dramatic sculpture glows brighter and the evocative gospel music of the Movement swells as visitors gather.

According to Reader’s Digest International, a visit to the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum can be a powerful experience: “This journey is not like other trips I’ve been on. This one will not be over when I land.”
